Deafblind Awareness Week

This year Deafblind Awareness Week will be observed from June 25 to July 1. This week is marked annually during the last week of June in honor of leading humanitarian Helen Keller’s birthday on June 27. Being deaf and blind herself, Keller’s work made a big difference in the lives of deafblind people. The term deaf-blindness refers to a combination of visual and auditory impairments and is much more common than many people realize. Over 15 million people worldwide are estimated to be living with severe deafblindness.

Deafblind

Around 0.2% of the world’s population is living with severe hearing loss and vision loss (Deaf-Blind individuals), and it's estimated that 2% of the world’s population live with ‘milder forms’ of this condition. Like all disabilities, both can be experienced on a spectrum and include people with any combination of vision and hearing loss. Some individuals with the most severe vision loss benefit from mobility assistance (service animals, canes, etc.) while others may simply need to have things closer in their visual field and require less mobility assistance.
